Caring For Your Watch
Please follow the guidelines below to ensure the longevity of your watch (especially vintage models).
1. Wear your watch or wind the mechanism as frequently as possible this actually helps to keep your watch running smoothly.
2. Do not over-wind. Whilst the guidelines state 20 to 30 we generally wind to a maximum of 20 and of course once you feel any resistance please stop. This is the watch warning you it is fully wound.
3. Even if your vintage watch states it is waterproof please do not allow your watch to come into contact with any water or even moisture. Being a vintage it is unlikely it will still have any waterproof capability and it will not be covered by our warranty should any damage be caused this way. We personally would not even recommend wearing during any vigorous activity to avoid any perspiration.
4. Vintage watches are made to be worn daily and here at Stonebridge we certainly do this ! However it is fair to say they are not as hard wearing as modern day watches and would recommend avoiding any activity that may cause a heavy impact.
5. When the time states between 8pm and 4am please do not change the date as this is when the date function is still active and can damage the mechanism.
6. Magnetic fields should be avoided in many cases. Fields from magnets, electronic devices, metal detectors etc. can cause parts inside the watch to gain a magnetic charge and stick to, or repel each other, causing the watch to malfunction. This is especially true for vintage.
7. Leather is a natural material, and is therefore porous. Keep leather straps dry and free from sweat and moisture. On hot days, you should wear a leather strap a little looser to allow air to circulate. When you remove your watch, allow it to air-dry before storing it. Ensure any creams, ointments or perfumes have dried fully before putting your watch on.
8. Do not leave a quartz watch with the crown pulled out. While this may save the battery, it leaves the movement open for moisture and dust in the air to enter and do damage. In the long term, this can be significantly more expensive to fix than a battery replacement.
9. It is important to make sure the chronograph is turned off when not in use, as this can drain the battery in quartz watches, or sap the power reserve, and possibly damage the movement in mechanical watches.
10. Lastly and this is very important advice. Enjoy your watch !
